Summary:
The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing the Bakkavor's safety programs in compliance with local, state and federal regulations. This position is also responsible for administering workers’ compensation claims ensuring communication with medical facilities, injured employee and coordination of modified duty program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Together with Safety Manager focuses on continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices thereby fostering a positive safety culture to enable observance of health and safety programs and action plans.
- Assists in the development and implementation of safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state and federal rules and regulations including OSHA and CALOSHA.
- Administers workers’ compensation claims ensuring communication with medical facilities and injured employees and coordination of modified duty program.
- Interprets and provides coaching on safety rules, regulations and procedures for management and employees.
- Conducts periodic in-depth compliance audits and root cause analysis of work areas and operations, to identify, evaluate and control unsafe health and safety hazards or risks.
- Coordinates and leads as needed planning, preparation, implementation, execution and recovery of emergency or crisis management events, employee injury events, environmental pollution events, fires safety events or other heath and safety risk events.
- Conducts safety observations and incident investigations to determine and implement continuous improvement actions across the site
- Conducts Safety training on all required OSHA topics, including: New Employee Orientation, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Trips, Slips & Falls, Electrical Safety, Hazard Communication, Hearing Protection, Emergency Action Plan, Bloodborne Pathogens, Lock-out/Tag-out Program, Forklift Operator certification
- Develops training material and maintains the Safety Training database.
- Coordinate and helps lead Safety Committee team meetings.
- Maintains log of all work-related injuries/illnesses, property damage incidents, and near misses; updates OSHA 300 logs as required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate Degree in Health & Safety or related field and 3 to 5 years in a Safety Specialist role, or equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Expertise in OSHA / CAL-OSHA compliance. OSHA-30 certification required.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to influence across all levels of an organization.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to take initiate and operate independently with general direction in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to remain calm in the event of an emergency
- Capable of maintaining a high level of confidentiality
- Continuous Improvement mindset
- Preferred Safety Certifications: CSP, ASP, OHST, etc.
- Food Industry experience preferred.
- Microsoft Office suite proficiency.
- Bilingual. (English/Spanish)
