POSITION TITLE: Safety & Compliance Supervisor
LOCATION: Shoreway Environmental Center, San Carlos, CA
REPORTS TO: General Manager
FLSA Status: Exempt
SALARY RANGE: $115k - $125k
POSITION SUMMARY: We are seeking an experienced and motivated Safety & Compliance Supervisor to oversee safety programs, regulatory compliance, and employee training for our transfer station, materials recovery facility (MRF), and Class A transportation operations. This position plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, compliant, and efficient work environment while ensuring adherence to DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and environmental regulations.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in solid waste, recycling, transportation, or industrial operations and possess a strong understanding of commercial fleet compliance, facility safety programs, accident prevention, and regulatory inspections.
This position requires a proactive leader who can work collaboratively with operations, maintenance, and transportation teams to promote a strong culture of safety and accountability.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBIITIES: The following responsibilities are general duties that a particular employee in this position may or may not be needed to perform. The actual duties required for this position will vary.
- Assist in administering and enforcing company safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, CHP, and environmental regulations.
- · Conduct routine facility inspections, safety audits, and hazard assessments
- · Assist with maintaining required safety programs.
- · Maintain OSHA logs and required compliance documentation.
- · Participate in accident, injury, vehicle collision, and near-miss investigations.
- · Assist in preparing corrective action reports and follow-up documentation.
- · Support DOT and FMCSA compliance programs for Class A CDL drivers and fleet operations.
- · Maintain and audit driver qualification files.
- · Ensure vehicle inspection and DVIR processes are properly completed.
- · Monitor fleet safety performance and assist with regulatory audits.
- · Conduct new-hire safety orientations and recurring employee training.
- · Promote employee engagement and accountability related to workplace safety.
- · Assist supervisors and managers with implementing safe work practices.
- · Maintain accurate safety and compliance records.
- · Track corrective actions and ensure timely resolution.
- · Assist with insurance, regulatory, and compliance documentation requests.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
· High school diploma or GED required.
· Minimum of 3–5 years of safety and compliance experience in:
o Transportation/fleet operations
o Industrial or heavy equipment environments
REQUIRED
· Valid California Class A Commercial Driver's license with a clean record
· Strong working knowledge of:
o OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations
o DOT/FMCSA regulations
o Fleet and transportation safety practices
· Experience with DOT/FMCSA compliance programs.
· Strong communication and employee training skills.
· Ability to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
· Strong organizational and documentation skills.
· Ability to work effectively in fast-paced operational environments.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety/compliance tracking systems.
· Ability to maintain professionalism and enforce policies consistently.
PREFERRED
· OSHA 30-Hour Certification
· DOT/FMCSA Compliance Training
· Experience conducting workplace safety inspections and investigations preferred.
· Experience working in a Class A CDL transportation operation strongly preferred.
· Forklift Trainer Certification
· Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) preferred
SKILLS
· Must be proactive, motivated, and a strong self-starter.
· Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft 365 environment; High degree of proficiency with the following: MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Teams, Visio
· Knowledge of general office procedures, equipment, and filing systems.
· Strong ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
· Ability to quickly learn department policies, procedures, goals, and services.
· Attention to detail and accuracy.
· Ability to change priorities regularly.
· Demonstrated ability to work with a distributed workforce across multiple areas.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
· Ability to access all areas of the facility throughout the workday.
· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, 15 pounds frequently, and 7 pounds constantly; required to obtain assistance of another qualified employee when attempting to lift or transfer objects over 25 pounds.
· Requires constant hand grasp and finger dexterity; frequent sitting, standing, walking and repetitive leg and arm movements, occasional bending, reaching forward and overhead; squatting and kneeling.
· Work is generally performed in an indoor, well-lighted, well-ventilated, heated, and air-conditioned environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day.
