Job Title: Database Engineer
Location: Scottsdale, AZ (Hybrid role, must be willing to relocate to Phoenix, AZ area to be considered)

Position Overview: We are seeking a Database Engineer to develop, optimize, and maintain scalable database solutions that power our mission-critical Electronic Health Records (EHR) application. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server and experience supporting large-scale, performance-intensive healthcare systems. You will play a key role in ensuring our database infrastructure scales seamlessly as we expand, while maintaining strict compliance with healthcare regulations like HIPAA.
Key Responsibilities:
Database Engineering & Optimization
- Develop, Design, and implement scalable, high-performance database architectures for EHR systems in Azure Cloud environments.
- Leverage Azure SQL technologies such as Azure SQL Managed Instance, Hyperscale, and Elastic Pools to support data growth and application scalability.
- Collaborate with development teams to ensure database structures align with application design and growth goals.
- Drive performance optimization initiatives, including indexing strategies, query tuning, and efficient schema design to support expanding workloads.
- Oversee the performance tuning and monitoring of databases to ensure optimal efficiency.
- Implement high-availability and disaster recovery solutions.
EHR System Support
- Optimize databases to ensure seamless performance of mission-critical EHR applications as user volumes scale.
- Provide database solutions that support real-time transactional data processing and historical data warehousing needs.
- Work with product and engineering teams to align database strategy with EHR-specific workflows, regulatory requirements, and healthcare industry standards.
Data Security & Compliance
- Establish and follow data security policies and procedures. Implement encryption, access controls, and auditing to ensure data confidentiality and integrity.
- Ensure database solutions adhere to HIPAA and HITECH regulations, maintaining patient data confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
- Implement secure, de-identified research databases with appropriate data synchronization processes.
- Enable external partners and authorized users to securely access research and operational data through Azure Private Link and secure APIs.
Standardization & Best Practices
- Define and enforce SQL coding standards for queries, stored procedures, and other artifacts.
- Conduct regular code reviews and provide training to ensure SQL best practices are followed.
- Experience with unit testing frameworks for SQL, such as tSQLt, DbFit, or SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), to validate stored procedures, queries, and functions.
- Collaborate with analytics and BI teams to implement optimized database structures for reporting and analytics.
Continuous Improvement
- Stay up to date on SQL advancements, database technologies, and performance optimization tools.
- Actively recommend improvements to existing systems, processes, and technologies to ensure readiness for growth.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience as a Database Engineer with a focus on Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL.
- Experience with EHR systems or other healthcare applications, including familiarity with workflows and compliance requirements.
- Proven expertise in SQL query optimization, performance tuning, indexing strategies, and schema design.
- Hands-on experience with Azure Cloud tools like:
o Azure SQL Database, Managed Instances, Hyperscale
o Azure Monitor, Query Store, and Automated Tuning
o Azure Synapse Analytics, Data Lake, and Power BI
- Strong knowledge of data security best practices, including encryption, access controls, and compliance with HIPAA and HITECH.
- Experience implementing high-availability and disaster recovery solutions.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, analytics, and product teams.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Big Data technologies and healthcare interoperability solutions (e.g., FHIR, HL7).
- Familiarity with tools like Flyway for database migrations and version control.
- Understanding of healthcare data warehousing and reporting solutions.

Salary: $80,000- $120,000
