The Health and Well-Being Coach II will care for GEHA health plan members through health coaching, and health and well-being education. The primary mode of delivering this coaching will be telephonic and digital. This coach will be a valued team member who contributes to several health and well-being programs, such as: lifestyle coaching, adaptive exercise, fitness training, health education, well-being content creation, and care coordination with a multidisciplinary team.
This role is primarily responsible for supporting members in their efforts to achieve a higher level of well-being and performance in life and work. The coach will elicit autonomous motivation, increase the capacity to change, and facilitate a change process through visioning, goal setting, and accountability, which leads to sustainable change for the good. The coach may occasionally collaborate with subject matter experts on well-being initiatives for GEHA health plan members. This position emphasizes evidence-based practice, whole-person centered care, and the value of a caring culture for both federal health plan members and GEHA employees.
To excel in this role, the coach will need skills and/or knowledge related to: transtheoretical coaching model, facilitating lasting behavior change, motivational interviewing, health education, human physiology, goal setting, mindfulness, resiliency, and physical activity progression.
SKILLS
Duties and Responsibilities:
Health Coaching:
- Perform initial evaluation of members through an assessment related to the service provided: health coaching with personalized lifestyle improvement support targeting dimensions of health.
- Use Clinical and Motivational interviewing skills to assess member’s need and establish mutually agreeable goals while supporting member in developing self-management skills in adopting positive behavior changes.
- Guide members related to defining their health and well-being vision, setting their health and well-being goals, building their support and accountability networks, achieving their health improvement plans, and improving their quality of life.
- Document encounters, facilitating outcomes recording, tracking, and analyzing.
- Review health risk assessments, biomarker, or lab data, claims history, and medical records to inform health education needs.
- Outreach to any members needing additional support or resources.
- Assist member with maximizing their member benefits and coordinate referrals to other team members, healthcare professionals, or specialty programs.
- Comply with all accreditations, State and Federal mandates.
- Demonstrate respect and sensitivity for all health plan members, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, language, sexuality, gender identity, gender expression, nationality, or health diagnosis.
- Assist in creating and delivering presentations for the Health and Well-Being, Quality, Medical Management, and Proactive Care Management teams.
- Design and organize member-facing and coach-facing well-being content which follows department guidelines for citations, reviews, sharing, and distributing.
- Perform other related tasks incidental to the above-described responsibilities.
Workplace and Schedule
- Monday to Friday, full time
- Primary hours are 8-5 PM CST; a minimum of 32 hours per week must fall between these hours for member-facing care.
- Remote or hybrid position. We predict onsite team meetings at our Lee’s Summit, MO or Independence, MO locations at least once per quarter when COVID-19 transmission rates permit.
- Flexible work location: work from home or elect to use one of our office locations (in Lee’s Summit, MO). Offices are equipped with vending, sit/stand desks, and fitness facilities.
Experience and Qualification Requirements
- NBC-HWC Certification: Certified by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (current)
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., health sciences, nutrition, psychology).
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years of coaching experience. Some coaching experience within a telehealth/virtual environment is preferred.
- Communication Skills: Active listening, empathetic, clear, motivational interviewing, non-judgmental attitude, feedback, encouragement, and cultural sensitivities.
- Empathy: Ability to empathize with clients and provide compassionate support.
- Adaptability: Flexibility in approach to meet individual client needs. Resiliency with change during growth and transition opportunities.
- Ethical conduct: Adherence to ethical standards and confidentiality guidelines.
Desired non-clinical skills in the following areas: Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Office tools (particularly Excel and Power Point), change management, written and verbal communication, teamwork, data analysis, strategic problem-solving and ability to recommend changes/solutions.
Work-at-home requirements
- Must have the ability to provide a non-cellular High Speed Internet Service such as Fiber, DSL, or cable Modems for a home office.
- A minimum standard speed for optimal performance of 30x5 (30mpbs download x 5mpbs upload) is required.
- Latency (ping) response time lower than 80 ms
- Hotspots, satellite and wireless internet service is NOT allowed for this role.
- A dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information

The annual base salary range for this position is $59,843 - $84,357 USD.
