DOT Safety Director – Trucking (Houston or Fort Worth)
Location: Houston, TX or Fort Worth, TX
Salary Range: $140,000 – $185,000 annually
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced DOT Safety Director to lead and continuously improve our company’s safety and compliance programs across our trucking operations. This role is responsible for ensuring full compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and state regulations, while building a strong safety culture and reducing risk across all terminals and field operations.
The ideal candidate is a strategic safety leader with deep knowledge of DOT compliance, driver safety programs, fleet risk management, and accident prevention within a trucking or transportation environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesDOT & Regulatory Compliance
- Oversee company compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and state transportation regulations
- Maintain and manage:
- CSA scores and safety metrics
- Driver qualification files
- Hours of Service compliance
- Drug & Alcohol program (49 CFR Part 40)
- Vehicle maintenance and inspection programs
- Lead DOT audits, compliance reviews, and safety investigations
Safety Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and execute a company-wide safety strategy
- Establish measurable KPIs and continuous improvement plans
- Partner with executive leadership on risk reduction and liability mitigation
- Build and promote a proactive safety culture across all locations
Driver & Operations Safety
- Oversee driver onboarding, training, and ongoing safety education
- Implement coaching, telematics, and behavior-based safety programs
- Monitor accident trends and lead root cause investigations
- Develop corrective and preventive action plans
Team Leadership
- Lead and develop the Safety Department
- Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, HR, and Risk Management
- Provide safety guidance to terminal leaders and field management
Qualifications
Required
- 8+ years of safety leadership in trucking or transportation
- 3+ years in a Director or Senior Manager level role
- Deep knowledge of:
- FMCSA regulations
- CSA program
- DOT compliance & audits
- Driver safety and fleet risk management
- Experience managing multi-location operations
- Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Transportation, or related field
- CSP, CDS, or similar safety certification
- Experience implementing telematics / safety technology
- Experience lowering CSA scores and accident rates
