FULL JOB DESCRIPTION:
By joining the CSI Specialty Engineering team you’ll have the opportunity to design, develop and test/analyze product capabilities for a wide area of developmental equipment as well as existing solutions that are repackaged to meet the rugged environment in which our equipment is expected to operate. Our engineers develop and support custom systems at the board, middleware and complete system levels. Our hardware designs range from simple microcontroller-based peripherals to complex secure and rugged processing and type accredited networked systems. CSI engineers work as a multidisciplinary team in order to optimize system design and analysis throughout the product lifecycle.
As part of a multidisciplinary team the CSI System Safety Engineer II will be engaged in all aspects of a program from bidding to delivery. It is also critical that the candidate exhibit strong communication skills and a desire to engage other engineers to both teach and learn. Candidates should be able to present compound problems to a broad audience that may not possess subject matter expertise or be intimately familiar with what system safety encompasses.
The selected candidate must be a U.S. Citizen and will be subject to government security investigations and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
Essential Job Functions/ Responsibilities:
- Apply their technical skills within the systems engineering framework (including production and support equipment design) and from a wholistic view of the programs they execute
- Develop, derive, understand and track System Safety requirements for all phases of a program
- Write guides, develop analyses, and support engineering modeling or simulations to address requirements at the component, subsystem, and system level
- Provide design direction for safety criteria for system, equipment, and procedures to control and eliminate hazards
- Prepare and review documents in a format consistent with US Military DIDs and interact at the program level during multidisciplinary design reviews (internal and external)
- Develop System Safety Program Plans (SSPP) IAW MIL-STD-882 and contractual requirements
- Perform hazard analyses IAW MIL-STD-882 and contractual requirements
- Perform MIL-STD-882 hazard analyses including Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Operating and Support Hazard Analysis (O&SHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), and Fault Tree Analysis
- Reviewing designs, specifications, test procedures, test reports, engineering change, reports, and deviation/waiver requests for potential safety impacts
- Develop Safety Assessment Report (SAR) IAW MIL-STD-882 and contractual requirements
- Participate in incident investigations and root cause or corrective action analyses
- Implement best practices from a System Safety perspective for all programs that they work
- Actively engage in training and mentoring of engineers that are less experienced in the arena of System Safety
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS in STEM and 5 years of Product/System Safety experience OR a MS and 3 years of Product/System Safety experience
- DOD Secret clearance or higher
- Familiarity with MIL-STD-882 or SAE ARP-4761
- Comfortable with fast pace and dynamic product development environments
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with DoD/aerospace practices, and programmatic experience with BOE, RFP, ROM
- DOD Top Secret clearance or higher
- The ideal candidate will be able to assess system level impacts based on component level data and determine and execute the evaluation method (quantitative or qualitative) for the question at hand
- Experience working with diverse engineering teams to identify product/system hazards, assess and mitigate safety risks encountered in the design, development, test, production, operation and disposal phases of the product/system lifecycle
- Experience supporting independent government Safety Review Boards (SRB) and Software System Safety Technical Review Panel (SSSTRP)
- Experience executing software system safety engineering on a military program
- Experience executing DO-178, AFSPCMAN 910710, or other relevant standards
- A wide breadth of experience in military or civil aviation aircraft systems
- Experience participating in DoD System Safety Working Groups
- Experience in system modeling tools (Cameo or similar MBSE tool)
