Job Summary:
The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position will perform on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks and are responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication and various types of On-Track Safety in controlled and non-controlled track areas.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error free and consistent with the rules; including but not limited to radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits
- Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure all personnel adhere to the safety requirements of the railroad
- Prepare and submit required electronic forms including but not limited to: a job set-up form for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports as required
- Handle and place signs, derail and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, which may be necessary multiple times throughout the day
- Actively participate in routine reoccurring safety classes and qualification training
- Maintain a high level of communication with the RWIC supervisors and managers regarding the various assignments and schedules
- Other duties assigned or required to meet the business needs
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the role.
- Effective in warning roadway workers of approaching trains.
- Understanding of on-track safety training and qualification requirements.
- Proficient in radio communication procedures with RWIC/EICs (Engineers in Charge).
- Capable of conducting job briefings with all roadway workers at their location.
- Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
- Skilled in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
- Proficiency with electronic communications, including email and text, as well as standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Minimum of 2 years of railroad experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- 2 to 5 years of experience in track maintenance.
- Prior experience working within a railway company.
- Training in railway Track Inspection Guidelines or equivalent.
Additional Qualifications, Certifications, etc.:
- CN On-Track Worker and Operating Rules.
