SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:
The Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Manager is responsible for leading and cultivating a comprehensive safety culture across our organization. This role is crucial in partnering with Operations, HR, and other Safety leaders to enhance safety awareness, foster a collaborative culture of shared safety responsibility, and ensure a healthy, compliant workplace. The EH&S Manager will focus on creating an environment where safety is a core value, empowering every employee to contribute actively to a safe and sustainable workplace.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Safety Culture Development
- Champion a culture of safety and environmental stewardship, ensuring safety becomes an integrated part of the day-to-day activities across all levels of the organization.
- Partner closely with Operations and HR to build safety awareness and accountability throughout the workforce.
- Develop programs that encourage employee engagement in EH&S practices, fostering a workplace where all employees feel responsible for maintaining a safe and healthy environment.
EH&S Program Management
- Oversee the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of EH&S programs, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and other relevant environmental standards.
- Oversee the treatment and discharge of wastewater from the milk manufacturing process, ensuring adherence to environmental standards.
- Collaborate with Wastewater Management teams and operations teams to optimize wastewater treatment processes and minimize environmental impact and Notice of Violations.
- Conduct regular environmental audits and assessments to identify areas of improvement.
- Prepare and submit required environmental reports to regulatory agencies and internal leadership.
- Oversee the management and compliance of wastewater treatment systems.
- Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs and recommend improvements to address emerging risks or changing regulations.
- Develop and implement sustainability programs aimed at reducing waste and improving resource efficiency throughout the facility’s processes.
- Promote environmentally friendly practices within the facility, fostering a culture of sustainability among employees.
Training and Development
- Design, coordinate, and conduct safety training programs for employees at all levels, including new hires, to increase awareness and competency in safety practices.
- Work closely with HR to develop ongoing training plans tailored to specific operational needs, safety policies, and compliance requirements.
- Conduct regular safety drills and simulations to prepare employees for emergency situations and ensure readiness.
Risk Assessment and Incident Management
- Lead hazard assessments, risk analyses, and accident investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Partner with HR and Operations to assist employees with injury/accident claims, return-to-work scenarios, and overall claims management.
- Collaborate with Operations to proactively identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Track and analyze EH&S metrics, reporting on incidents, near misses, and trends to drive continual improvement in safety performance.
Collaboration and Communication
- Serve as a key resource and advisor to leadership and Operations teams on EH&S matters, actively contributing to cross-functional safety initiatives.
- Lead the monthly Plant Safety Committee meetings ensuring participation and input from leaders and employees, addressing issues and recognizing achievements.
- Engage with HR and Operations to ensure that safety practices align with organizational goals, supporting productivity and employee well-being.
- Foster open communication around safety issues, creating an environment where employees feel empowered to report hazards and contribute to safety improvements.
- Member of Food Safety Team and Food Quality Team
- Perform other duties, as necessary.
Other duties and leadership Responsibilities:
- Supervisory Responsibilities
- Responsible for employee relations including work direction of employees, hiring, training, performance reviews, administering policies and procedures, disciplinary action, and compensation recommendations.
- Direct implementation of departmental objectives, goals, and policies.
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Understand and adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices.
- Safety Protocol
- Stop any observed unsafe acts and obey facility safety rules and procedures.
- Correct or report any observed safety hazards.
- Support safety policies and programs.
EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field of study required; at least 10 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
- An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
- Minimum ten (10) years of experience within a similar manufacturing environment required.
- Dairy experience preferred.
- Food/beverage manufacturing and dairy safety background highly preferred.
- Knowledge of First Aid, Confined Space entry, LOTO, Process Safety Management, and experience in Classroom Instruction required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Proven ability to partner effectively with cross-functional teams, particularly Operations and HR, to drive safety initiatives.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage employees at all organizational levels.
- Analytical mindset, with experience in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and EH&S metrics tracking.
- Demonstrated ability to drive organization change through strong interpersonal skills and formal problem-solving techniques.
- Proven ability to collaborate with others to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.
- Ability to analyze and assess training and development needs.
- Ability to supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
- Demonstrated attention to detail in composing, typing, and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Effective formal presentation skills, commands attention, and can manage group process during the presentation.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision, adapt to a changing environment quickly, and think independently.
- Knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state environmental laws, regulations, procedures, and standards.
- Knowledge and understanding of employment and union avoidance practices.
- Knowledge of budgeting cost estimating, and fiscal management principles and procedures.
