Position Overview
Following industry best safety practices, Gerber Poultry incorporates the requirements of OSHA, EPA and USDA into its safety procedures. Under the direction of the Company Safety Manager and Director, the Safety Coordinator develops and implements comprehensive training policies compliant with OSHA, EPA & USDA. Working as part of the team with other Gerber managers and supervisors, the position is responsible for maintaining a safe and hazard free work environment for all team members.
Note: The successful management of this position is dependent on the ability of the position to build relationships that support Company core values while informing and influencing team members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Safety Policies & Procedures:
- Safety Culture: through training, communication, relationships with and support of co-workers develop an ongoing safety culture. Support of low accident rates through communications and training. Takes advantage of industry, state and local safety conferences.
- Overarching all daily and regulatory activities the position is responsible to influence all levels of the company to adopt and support a corporate wide safety culture
- Develop, implement and maintain team-member safety training programs.
- Research & attend federal, university or private industry classes, seminars or trade shows pertinent to further developing Gerber’s safety policies, procedures & culture.
- Regularly review company safety policies to ensure that they are continually effective.
- Conduct inspections and safety audits in order ensure compliance with Gerber’s best safety management practices and OSHA, EPA and USDA requirements.
- Keep current on industry best safety practices.
- Incorporate new industrial safety techniques & procedures into team member training.
- OSHA Requirements:
- Policies and procedures
- Maintain electronic Safety Data Sheet (SDS) data base
- Lockout/Tagout training
- Manage required daily, weekly and monthly facility safety inspections, including
air and noise monitoring and testing.
- Maintain awareness of updates to safety regulations on the federal, state and local levels.
NOTE: All Gerber team members have the obligation to prevent injury and stop any process that puts themselves or fellow team members at risk. In particular, with notification to the Supervisor or Manager on the floor, acting on behalf of and with the support of the Human Resource Manager, the position has the authority to stop an individual action or process line, evacuate a department or direct any steps necessary to eliminate an imminent safety risk.
Safety Meetings:
- Schedule, manage and document all Safety Meetings
Documentation:
- Maintain up to date Safety Data Sheet (SDS) library.
- Maintain required logs and safety training records.
Peer influence & support:
- Ability to get along with and respect the rights of co-workers and demonstrates a cooperative spirit.
- Maintain or develop relationships with local, county and state safety organizations and emergency response teams.
- Understand the functions of hatchery & farm operations, sanitation, maintenance, OP, facility production & office activities. Develop & maintain safety policies appropriate to each area
- Develop working relationships with third party vendors (e.g. catch crews, building & maintenance contractors, sanitation providers) and oversee adherence to all company safety policies.
- Support Maintenance PSM team documentation needs
Training Requirements:
- Comprehensive knowledge & experience with OSHA safety standards & documentation requirements
- Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training & certification a plus
- Communication: Bilingual (Spanish/English) communication speaking & writing skills and ability to communication with non-Spanish, non-English speaking team members. Effective in listening to others, expressing ideas, both verbally and in writing. Providing relevant and timely information to supervisors and co-workers.
- Must be proficient with Excel and Word programs.
Physical Demands:
- Walking, sitting, standing; typical of office setting
- Climbing (i.e., ladders), stretching, reaching in facility environment, on roofs or any areas of hatchery, facility & farms.
- Driving short distances (e.g., to farms), or long (meetings, etc.)
Personal Protective Equipment:
PPE not required in office setting. PPE is required when entering plant environment and may include helmet, smock, boots, hairnet and other required PPE.
Work Environment:
Ranges from office to farms to facility roofs; in office environment or exposed to elements.
Job Hazards:
Risks are typical of hazards one may face when walking through any manufacturing facility, driving a car or assessing a grower’s farm. In all cases simple prudence and proper PPE mitigates any personal safety risk.
