Job Title: Superintendent, Process Safety Management

About the Role
The Superintendent, Process Safety Management role plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with Rio Tinto’s health and safety standards across operations. This position leads the implementation of process safety programs, audits, and risk assessments to safeguard people, assets, and the environment. The role requires strong collaboration with cross-functional teams and leadership to embed a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive adherence to Rio Tinto health and safety standards, policies, and procedures.
- Implement and maintain process safety programs aligned with regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119, EPA, API, CCPS).
- Lead process safety governance efforts, including audits, incident investigations, and risk assessments.
- Provide technical safety assistance and develop tools for process and functional safety engineers.
- Act as Process Safety Risk Coordinator for hazard and control identification, risk management, and documentation.
- Facilitate risk management processes such as HAZOP, Bowtie Analysis, and Root Cause Analysis.
- Partner with leadership to promote a culture of process safety and continuous improvement.
- Prepare and present reports on process safety performance and compliance.
- Support emergency management and incident response planning.
What You’ll Bring (Minimum Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related discipline.
- At least five years of experience in process safety within industrial or mining environments.
- Strong knowledge of risk management processes (Planning, Risk Assessment, Bowtie Analysis).
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams and communicate effectively.
- Proficiency in English (written and verbal).
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Process Safety Professional (CCPSP) or equivalent.
- Experience with SAP or equivalent CMMS systems.
- Six Sigma or Lean methodologies (Green Belt or higher).
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance frameworks and industry best practices.

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum, tellurium and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
