Characteristics of the Position
General Overview
The Drug Testing Coordinator performs a variety of specialized functions related to drug testing, including specimen collection, documentation and record keeping; exercises sound judgment in order to maintain confidentiality needed in the performance of duties; reports to the Drug Test Unit Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Instructs and assists individuals in custody (IIC) providing specimens during intake; checks accuracy of paperwork provided. Collects urine specimens and secures and packages specimens following strict Chain of Custody procedures.
Assures identifying data on each specimen collected is accurate and permanently recorded in the sequence of collection in record book.
Interfaces with fellow coordinators in order to preserve a fluid operation; oversees transfer of specimens from collection site to the laboratory by working closely with vendor courier.
Helps maintain office files and records; performs additional duties at supervisor’s request.
Processes confidential IIC information and keeps official records; acts as custodian of documents and records; directs preparation and filing of documents.
Prepares special reports, summaries or replies to inquiries, selecting relevant information from a variety of sources, such as reports and/or documents.
Independently completes assignments and resolves problems.
Reviews office records for adherence to quality and quantity standards; notes deficiencies and confers with supervisory staff regarding reasons for substandard work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skill in planning, developing and completing complex assignments with minimal direction.
Accurate judgment in making decisions with the ability to implement programs affecting own work or the work of others or reorganizing established precedents and in meeting new problems.
Thorough working knowledge of or ability to quickly and effectively grasp and utilize the policies, protocols, systems, procedures, and technical vernacular of the agency, department and County, as they are applicable to assigned duties and responsibilities.
A high level of accuracy and proficiency in the use of word processing, PC software and other computerized programs to manage and generate information, reports, letters, etc. may be required.
Ability to communicate effectively with tact and courtesy; ability to gather information from others, making inquiries as needed; ability to convey information and/or explain or describe basic office policy and procedure to others either in person or by telephone.
Ability to gather and review confidential materials, information and incidents of record.
Ability to understand and carry out technical and complex instructions, either written or verbal, and accurately relate instructions, in full or part, to others.
Ability to follow instruction, adapt to change and pay attention to detail.
Skill and accuracy in filing and record keeping.
Skill and ability to effectively perform and direct any or all clerical and administrative tasks within the jurisdiction or area of authority designated.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a High School Diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) test certificate.
One (1) year of administrative or clerical work experience handling confidential records.
Familiarity with chain of custody procedures.
Typing skills (25 w.p.m. with 95% accuracy) and familiarity with computer keyboards and data inputting, clearly legible handwriting, proficiency in spelling.
Ability to lift and move testing supplies (up to 25 lbs.).
Excellent written and verbal skills.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to work within the Cook County Department of Corrections, including the ability to work directly with the incarcerated population.
Capable to work any shift assigned, including days, afternoons, or midnights; must be capable of working holidays and weekends; must be able to work mandatory overtime as required.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous urine or blood collection and/or lab work experience.
Two (2) years of customer service experience obtained within the last five (5) years.

Health Insurance Program – Health insurance coverage includes medical, dental and vision care and is available for an employee and his/her eligible dependents.
Holidays – Thirteen (13) Holidays are granted in each Fiscal Year
Sick Leave – Granted sick leave is earned and accrued at the rate of one (1) day for each month of service and may be accumulated up to one hundred and seventy-five (175) working days.
Vacation Leave – Granted Vacation leave is earned and accrued, with employees having the opportunity to accrue fifteen (15) days within the Fiscal Year; Vacation leave accruals increase based on an employee’s anniversary date of employment.
Life Insurance – Basic term life insurance, equal to one (1) time the employee’s annual salary, is offered to every employee at no cost and the employee may elect to purchase supplemental coverage.
Pension Plan – Employees contribute into the Cook County Pension Fund and earn a prescribed percentage for each year of service; employees may be eligible for an annual annuity after ten (10) years of service and upon reaching a certain age based on when the employee started employment.
