Position Overview
The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the organization's safety programs to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, reduce risks, and promote a culture of safety across the company’s transportation operations. This role requires a proactive leader who can effectively engage with employees, contractors, and regulatory agencies to uphold the highest standards of workplace and operational safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety Program Development & Implementation:
- Design, implement, and monitor comprehensive safety policies and procedures in compliance with OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, USCG, and other relevant regulatory agencies.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions to address potential hazards.
- Develop and maintain the company’s Safety Management System (SMS) to drive continuous improvement.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for HSSE-related issues providing technical guidance to personnel.
- Training & Development:
- Plan, deliver, and oversee employee safety training programs, including onboarding, recurring, and job-specific training.
- Maintain accurate records for all training activities and ensure proper certification and compliance for safety-sensitive positions (e.g., Merchant Marine Credentials, HazMat, CDL drivers).
- Keep employees informed about changes to regulations and company safety protocols.
- Incident Management:
- Lead investigations into accidents, injuries, and near-misses to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain incident reports, safety metrics, and other documentation for internal use and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with HR, Marine Risk Manager, and third-party insurance, and operations teams to manage workers’ compensation, Jones Act claims and return-to-work programs.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Prepare for and manage audits, inspections, and assessments by external agencies and internal stakeholders.
- Maintain safety records and documentation in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.
- Employee Engagement & Leadership:
- Foster a positive safety culture by promoting employee involvement and accountability in safety practices.
- Collaborate with leadership to integrate safety into operational decisions and long-term planning.
- Act as a resource and advisor for all safety-related concerns across the organization.
- Reporting & Analysis:
- Track, analyze, and report safety performance metrics, such as incident rates and compliance status, to leadership.
- Identify trends and recommend data-driven strategies to improve safety outcomes.
- Prepare safety reports for internal stakeholders and external regulatory bodies.
Other duties may be assigned to support the department or other departments as needed.
Qualifications & Experience

- Education: Associate degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Transportation Management, or a related Maritime field.
- Completion of a recognized maritime training program may substitute for a degree.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience in the marine or transportation industry.
- Certifications:
- USCG Master’s license (preferred)

- In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, USCG).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to train and engage employees at all organizational levels.
- Proficiency with safety software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Leadership and interpersonal skills to foster teamwork and collaboration.
Working Conditions
- Frequent travel to company facilities, worksites, or vessels as needed.
- May require working outdoors or in field environments to conduct inspections or investigations.
- Availability for emergencies outside standard working hours.
Preferred Attributes
- Experience in fleet or vessel safety management.
- Familiarity with Hazardous Materials (HazMat) transportation protocols.
Physical Demands

- Ability to stand, walk, and perform inspections on vessels or in industrial environments.
- Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to use hands and fingers to operate a computer and other equipment.

Pay: $100,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
