RK Transport Inc. is a small trucking company in Southwestern Indiana running approximately 37 trucks hauling various kinds of freight, but specializing in moving agriculture freight: heavy equipment, fertilizer, seed, and feed.
Role Overview:
The Safety and Compliance Director is a senior leadership position responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing comprehensive safety policies and regulatory compliance programs across the entire transportation operation with a strong background in the agriculture industry. This role ensures strict adherence to DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and other state/federal regulations to protect company drivers, assets, and the public, while maintaining high safety performance metrics (CSA/SMS scores) and fostering a "safety-first" culture.
Key Responsibilities:
- Regulatory Compliance: Serve as the subject matter expert on Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), overseeing hours of service (HOS), driver qualification files, DOT drug/alcohol testing, and electronic logging device (ELD) data accuracy. Responsible for obtaining and understanding permits for OSW loads.
- Safety Program Development: Craft, maintain, and execute corporate safety manuals, policies, and procedures that meet or exceed industry standards.
- Accident Investigation & Risk Mitigation: Lead investigations of accidents, incidents, and near-misses, conducting root cause analysis, implementing corrective actions, and managing worker’s compensation or insurance claims.
- Training & Driver Engagement: Create and provide safety training and onboarding orientation for drivers, mechanics, and staff to improve defensive driving and hazard awareness.
- Auditing & Performance Monitoring: Perform frequent safety audits of facilities, equipment, and driver logs, using data analytics to pinpoint trends, mitigate hazards, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs). Supervise and oversee shop service mechanics to ensure fleet is maintained properly.
- Liaison with Authorities: Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory inspections, audits, and DOT investigations.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in transportation safety management, with a proven track record in DOT regulation compliance.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Supply Chain, Safety Management, or equivalent professional experience.
- Knowledge: Deep understanding of FMCSA Parts 40, 382, 383, and 390–399.
- Technology: Proficiency in ELD systems, Motive fleet management software and data analysis tools.
- Leadership: Strong communication skills, with the ability to lead, influence, and enforce safety protocols across the organization.
- Certifications: Certified Director of Safety (CDS) or Certified Transportation Safety Professional (CTSP) preferred.

Pay: $51,315.55 - $61,799.38 per year
