Overview
The Safety Officer is responsible for developing and implementing a wholistic organizational safety program, enforcing safety policies, and evaluating practices and facilities to ensure compliance with legal and organizational guidelines. They conduct training sessions, monitor compliance, investigate, track accidents & incidents, and provide recommendations for improvement. They also communicate guidelines to employees/staff, report on safety issues, and develop relevant policies to maintain a safe workplace.
Responsibilities
- Subject matter expert on the organizational AFCU Safety Program and Procedures
- Creates, updates, and maintains the AFCU Safety Program and procedures.
- Acts as a liaison between Credit Union employees, third-party vendors, auditors/examiners, and department personnel regarding safety items.
- Prepares documents and information for regulatory examinations and inquiries.
- Leads the quarterly meetings with safety committee and oversees their activities.
- Works directly with the Business Continuity department with disaster recovery planning procedures, emergency response procedures, crisis management procedures, and pandemic response procedures.
- Maintains and understands state and governmental safety regulations, along with best practices that directly affect the Credit Union
- Has an in depth understanding of OSHA & ADA requirements.
- Understanding of SDS, updating and tracking.
- Required to attend ongoing training to achieve a better working knowledge of methodologies, regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
- Has the ability to draw valid conclusions from new regulations.
- Responsible to implement new regulations into the Credit Unions procedures as required.
- Life-safety activities
- Manages the building inspections and site assessments (Campus & Branch) for compliance.
- Develops and maintains the Emergency Response Plan.
- Purchases, installs, and maintains life safety equipment and supplies such as first aid, 72-hour kits, emergency POD’s, evacuation chairs and automated external defibrillators (AED).
- Reviews and updates SDS books electronically as well as the onsite postings.
- Conducts evacuation, fire, and earthquake drills.
- Coordinates with tenants and internal employees for drills appropriately.
- Responsible for the training and job/task assignments of the designated safety wardens.
- Reports to rally points and confirms with building wardens that all areas have been evacuated and personnel followed procedures and protocol.
- Has authorization to move personnel to secondary rally point if primary is unsafe.
- Records, collects, and maintains the evacuation status logs and reports.
- Manages the buildings evacuation signage requirements.
- Coordinates yearly fire alarm and system testing with maintenance and Physical Security for wet and dry systems/alarm tie in.
- Works directly with Business Continuity on delivering automated emergency notifications to employees.
- Is an expert and lead coordinator in all types of emergencies. (chemical emergencies, earthquake, fire, flood, natural gas leak, power outage, severe weather, tornado/high wind, hostile intruder/active shooter, medical emergency, etc.)
- Establishes effective business relations with law enforcement, fire, public sector, and related professionals.
- Training activities
- Trains branch and department staff on emergency response procedures.
- Develops, coordinates, conducts, and oversees training for Credit Union staff as it relates to safety issues.
- Subject matter expert for course content and preparedness information delivered via the development center.
- Organizes and conducts internal department trainings and staff meetings specific for the Facilities, Critical Facilities, and Construction teams. (Lock-out/tag-out, PPE, confined space, fall protection/ladder, AED, CPR, First Aid, etc.).
- Conducts bloodborne pathogens training and vaccination tracking (HBV, HCV).
- Oversees any after action reviews.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned
- Maintains records and statistics on Accident & Incident reports that are submitted.
- Oversees the safety coordination with contractors and AFCU staff with any large-scale project/campus masterplan.
- Purchases, maintains and tracks safety/PPE equipment.
- Provides management team with guidance on safety related items and confirms project site fulfills industry, local, state, and federal guidelines, and regulations.
- Coordinates with HR, Business Continuity, Campus Facilities, Branch Facilities, Critical Facilities, Physical Security, AFCU general staff in relation to safety.
- Promotes a safety culture at AFCU.

Qualifications
Training/Education/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational and environmental health and safety, emergency management, or a related field required.
- Certification in risk management and health/safety management.
Required Knowledge
- Detailed knowledge of related laws and regulatory requirements (OSHA, ADA, SDS, etc.).
- Comprehensive knowledge of safety procedures, emergency management concepts, planning, analysis, and methodologies.
- Understanding of Credit Union policies and procedures.
Experience Required
- 5+ years of experience in a related field. Credit Union experience preferred.
- Experience performing emergency response activities.
- Computer skills should include MS Office Suite.
- Use of software programs to manage safety and emergency notification activities.
