Job description
The Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety programs and procedures to ensure a safe working environment on paving and restoration construction projects. This role involves compliance of construction projects, monitoring compliance, and investigating incidents to prevent future occurrences. Also responsible for developing and implementing safety programs and procedures to protect employees from workplace hazards.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct safety inspections and audits for Underground Utility and recommend corrective actions.
- Investigate accidents and incidents and near misses to determine root causes and develop preventive measures.
- Collaborate with Project Managers and Foreman.
- Provide Operator Qualification (OQ's) and safety training to employees.
- Maintain safety records, reports and training activities.
- Stay up to date on safety regulations and best practices.
- Promote a culture of safety in the workplace.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Environmental Science, or related field; or a minimum of 3–5 years of experience in safety management.
- Certified Safety Management credential (or equivalent).
- Electric or gas utility experience strongly preferred.
- OSHA 10, OSHA 30, HAZWOPER 40 + current 8‑hour refresher, Electrical Awareness, First Aid & CPR — or ability to obtain all required certifications within the first 90 days of employment.
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations, hazards, and best practices related to utility construction, paving, and restoration.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with field crews, management, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Proactive problem-solving skills with the ability to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Demonstrates strong attention to detail and the ability to thoroughly review work, maintain accuracy, and follow established processes to ensure consistent quality.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) with the ability to create, edit, and format professional documents, spreadsheets, and presentations to support daily operations.
