Position Description
The Safety Specialist plays a key role in ensuring compliance with safety regulations, promoting a safety-first culture, and supporting the implementation of Lund Construction’s health and safety programs across all job sites. This position conducts regular inspections, delivers safety training, assists in investigations, and works closely with both field crews and management to reduce risks and improve workplace safety. The ideal candidate brings strong regulatory knowledge, practical field experience, and a proactive approach to hazard identification and mitigation.
DOT Compliance Administration
- Maintain and audit all driver qualification files, vehicle inspection logs, and driver hours of service records.
- Monitor and manage the company’s DOT compliance program, including annual MVR checks, medical certifications, and drug/alcohol testing program.
- Schedule and track DOT physicals, random drug screenings, and related documentation.
Site Safety Oversight
- Conduct routine and unannounced site safety audits and inspections to assess compliance with applicable safety standards.
- Identify existing and predictable hazards and recommend corrective actions to workers and supervisors on accident prevention and the elimination of unsafe work practices and conditions.
- Enforce compliance with company, Fed-OSHA, Cal/OSHA and local safety standards and policies.
Training & Orientation
- Facilitate safety orientations for new hires and subcontractors.
- Assist in the development and scheduling of ongoing safety training sessions, toolbox talks, and tailgate meetings.
- Monitor and schedule safety certification renewals and compliance tracking.
Incident Response & Documentation
- Respond to incidents and near misses, as needed, lead or support investigations and root cause analysis.
- Prepare and review incident reports as needed and follow up on corrective actions to ensure compliance and prevent recurrence.
- Maintain OSHA logs and assist with reporting to regulatory agencies as required.
Program Support
- Participate in the development and revision of safety policies, procedures, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
- Track, manage and maintain safety equipment inventory for field teams.
- Assist in conducting safety audits and program evaluations.
- Assist with Worker Compensation, Auto and property claims, as needed.

Position Requirements
Education & Certification
- High school diploma or GED required. Associate or bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
- OSHA 30 (Construction) certification required.
- OSHA 500 Authorized Trainer certification required.
- CPR/First Aid certification required, CPR/First Aid instructor certification preferred
- Additional safety credentials (e.g.,CSHO, CHST, STS, etc.) preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in construction safety or a related role.
- Experience in heavy civil, underground utility, or public works construction strongly preferred.
Other Requirements
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Willingness to travel to multiple job sites in the Sacramento region.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
Regulatory & Technical Knowledge
- Knowledge and understanding of Cal/OSHA and Fed OSHA standards for construction and general industry and hazard recognition.
- Strong working knowledge of excavation, confined space, respiratory hazards and protection, occupational hazards, traffic control, and heavy equipment safety.
Communication & Interpersonal
- Ability to deliver clear safety messaging to both field and management teams.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence others to adopt safe behaviors.
Technology & Tools
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and safety management systems or mobile safety apps.
- Ability to complete detailed reports and documentation accurately and on time.
Problem-Solving & Initiative
- Proactive in identifying risks and driving solutions.
- Able to work independently and maintain accountability under minimal supervision.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role is performed in a professional office and jobsite environment and requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and filing systems. It involves extended periods of sitting and working at a computer, along with occasional standing, walking, bending, and reaching. Lifting or moving items up to 50 pounds may be required on occasion. The office environment is typically quiet, climate-controlled, and suitable for tasks requiring focus and attention to detail. Field environment is typical outdoor climate with uneven walking working surfaces. This is a full-time office and field position.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
