National Defense Corporation is seeking a Sr Safety Engineer.
JOB TITLE: Sr. Safety Engineer
DEPARTMENT: Medium Cannon Caliber (MCC) Engineering
REPORTS TO: MCC Program Operations Director
POSITION DESCRIPTION: National Defense Corporation has an opening for a Sr. Safety Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all manufacturing, handling, and storage operations involving explosive and hazardous materials. The role involves applying engineering principles to identify and eliminate potential hazards, developing and implementing safety protocols, and ensuring strict compliance with all federal and military safety regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safety Program Management: Develop, execute, and monitor the facility's explosives safety program (ESP) to ensure compliance with military, federal (e.g., OSHA, EPA), and internal safety standards.
- Risk Assessment and Analysis: Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and other risk assessments for all manufacturing operations.
- Facility and System Design: Review and approve engineering plans and specifications for new, renovated, or demolished facilities, equipment, and processes to ensure safety features and regulations are incorporated throughout the system's lifecycle.
- Explosives Safety Quantity Distance (ESQD) Evaluation: Perform complex analyses to determine and maintain safe distances between potential explosive sites, energetic storage areas, and personnel.
- Incident Investigation: Serve as a lead investigator for any incidents or accidents involving ammunition and explosives. Determine root causes and develop corrective and preventative actions.
- Technical Consultation: Act as a subject matter expert on explosives safety, advising management and project teams on best practices and criteria.
- Emergency Response Planning: Assist in the development and execution of emergency response plans for fire, explosions, or hazardous material releases.
- Audits and Inspections: Conduct regular safety surveys, inspections, and audits of facilities, equipment, and procedures to identify potential hazards and ensure continuous compliance.
- Training and Communication: Create and deliver specialized training programs for personnel on explosives handling, safety procedures, and regulations.
- Contract Compliance: Ensure conformance to all safety related customer contract requirements and develop customer safety related documentation submissions.
- FRACAS: Participate in Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action System teams.
- Based on the work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
POSITION TYPE:
- This is a Salary Exempt full-time position.
TRAVEL:
- Travel (15-20% of work time).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's Degree in Safety Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field, and 5+ years of experience, or a Master of Science Degree in a STEM discipline with 3+ years of experience.
- Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance which requires US Citizenship as a prerequisite. .
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential for preparing reports, conducting training, and clearly conveying safety information to all levels of the organization.
- Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities to identify hazards and develop effective mitigation strategies.
- The ability to build rapport and work collaboratively with diverse teams, including engineers, operators, and management.
- A high degree of precision and meticulous attention to detail is necessary when working with complex, high-risk processes.
- Due to the work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
- Candidate must be able to obtain BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives) approval.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Relevant professional certifications, such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Process Safety Professional (CCPSC), are highly valued.
- Solid Understanding of Design Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA) and Process Failure Mode Effect Analysis (PFMEA).
- Experience working with energetics and other hazardous products.
- In-depth knowledge of explosives safety criteria, risk assessment methodologies (e.g., HAZOP), and relevant industry standards.
