This will include both local and national safety regulations. You will be responsible for coordinating the implementation and continuous improvement of all our safety program. The Engineer 3, Occupational Safety, working under general direction, working as a contributing team member, is responsible for applying technical safety standards, principles, theories, and concepts, to independently develop approaches to solutions for a wide range of difficult occupational safety problems such as hazard control and prevention, safety systems and equipment, compliance, risk, etc. with consistency in a timely manner. The role coordinates with other team members to implement plant-wide safety processes such as the Company’s Safety Operating System (SOS), emergency response planning, safety training, and the application of technical standards, principles, theories, and concepts. The role would also work with senior engineers and managers to contribute to the completion of milestones within specific projects as per function priorities.
You'll have...
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety/Health Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, or any other related discipline or commensurate work experience.
- Minimum 5 years of work experience, preferably in Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, or a related field.

Work Requirements:
- Involves frequent (defined as one to two-thirds of the time) lifting of more than 10 to 25 pounds. Work performed requires a good deal of walking or standing and may include some sedentary work and working conditions that include moderate noise levels related to the use of office equipment or machinery. May involve exposure to varying outside temperatures.

What you'll do...
- Assists other team members with the implementation of plant-wide safety processes including safety operating system, emergency response planning, and safety training orientations, with consistency in a timely manner by providing expertise on the application of technical principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
- Participates in the implementation of regular inspections and audits to identify and assess workplace hazards, risks, and related issues of technical nature in critical domains such as safety equipment and systems, hazard identification, risk evaluation, preventive maintenance, etc. to ensure compliance with all federal, state, local laws, regulations, and corporate health and safety policies.
- Participates and supports launch activities for new projects, facilitates job hazard analysis for new equipment, off-standard understanding, approvals, etc., and anticipates possible safety issues. Liaises with the plant and network medical, security functions, and UAW Health and Safety representatives.
- Leads accident investigations with appropriate cross-functional team members, applies a thorough understanding of technical principles, theories, and concepts to identify root causes, and assists in the development and implementation of corrective actions without compromising functional integrity.
- Coordinates with multiple internal stakeholders for the design and implementation of Training across departments on occupational safety subjects such as hazardous materials management, machine guarding, energy control, power lockout, root cause analysis, manufacturing process safety, fire safety, new employee orientation, etc. to prevent employee injuries and illnesses and the elimination of hazards in the work environment. Supports and actively participates with the training leader and operations to manage and ensure completion of all required health, safety, and ergonomic-related training.
- Participates in the delivery of Occupational Safety projects by leveraging a strong understanding of safety concepts, principles, and theories to analyze a wide range of difficult occupational safety problems and design imaginative and thorough solutions consistent with the organization’s objectives and policies. Anticipates implementation issues to design a practical plan of action. Represents the organization in meetings with auditors and consultants on difficult technical safety issues associated with these projects.
- Prepares Occupational Safety-specific communications and standards as per established processes to encourage the adoption of Safety practices, focused on incident avoidance and regulatory compliance. Communicates effectively and acts as a liaison with statutory authorities, regulatory bodies, and corporate representatives.
- Participates in continuous improvement initiatives to recommend updates to existing Occupational Safety specific guidelines and programs related to safety in the workplace, hazardous materials management, industrial hygiene monitoring, equipment safety systems, etc.
- Demonstrates full knowledge of technical occupational safety subjects such as risk assessment and hazard identification, incident investigation, injury statistics reporting, safety program development, industrial hygiene and exposure monitoring, safety equipment and systems, etc. along with a strong understanding and application of related concepts and principles. Assists in the oversight of employee training programs and can present safety training materials as needed.
