Title: Safety Officer – Power Generation

Job Summary:
PIC Group is seeking a highly skilled Safety Officer – Power Generation at a combined-cycle gas turbine power plant located in Queens, NY. The Safety Officer – Power Generation will report directly to the Safety Manager and will collaborate with the Operations and Maintenance teams to help them achieve their site-wide safety goals. In this role, the Safety Officer – Power Generation will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with safety procedures, and driving continuous improvement in safety practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform worksite inspections to verify compliance with applicable safety procedures, regulations, and site safety plans.
- Assist teams in mitigating identified hazardous conditions and unsafe acts.
- Conduct thorough examinations of plant machinery, working environments, and structures, assessing employee safety in areas such as ergonomics, noise, heat, and vibrations, while taking photographs and collecting samples as needed to support safety assessments.
- Participate in incident investigations and support the development of corrective actions and root cause analyses to prevent future occurrences.
- Prepare detailed incident reports, including analysis of cause and effect, actions taken, and photographic evidence as required.
- Ensure all site workers are equipped with suitable personal protective equipment (PPE), such as goggles, ear protection, gloves, and appropriate safety clothing.
- Monitor subcontractors' adherence to plant safety regulations during onsite work.
- Continuously monitor all project-related activities, ensuring alignment with Health & Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management systems.
- Attend construction kick-off meetings to ensure safety requirements are communicated and enforced.
- Conduct regular site visits to monitor compliance activities and ensure safety measures are in place across all projects.
- Lead EHS safety training sessions and provide educational support to new hires, trainees, and subcontractors.
- Develop methods to anticipate and mitigate potential hazards based on experience, historical data, and other relevant information sources.
- Provide ongoing safety training to all site personnel as required, ensuring a proactive approach to safety awareness.
- Encourage employees to proactively identify unsafe conditions and take preventive actions to address potential risks.
Job Requirements:
- Prior hands-on safety experience in an operational gas plant environment is required.
- Strong communication skills, analytical ability, attention to detail, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Experience with root cause analysis, corrective actions, and safety operational procedures.
- Extensive knowledge of gas and steam technologies.
- Hands-on experience with gas turbine, steam turbine, generators, heat recovery steam generators, and associated controls and monitoring systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and MS Project).
- Adherence to all established safety policies and procedures is mandatory.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, kneel, twist, climb stairs and ladders, and enter plant equipment for inspections.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must wear personal protective safety equipment (respirators, safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, etc.) as required.
Education / Experience:
- HS Diploma required.
- College Degree in Environmental Sciences preferred, not required.
- 5+ years’ experience in power plant (Combined Cycle preferred) operations and maintenance or similar industry in a safety/EHS capacity required.
- Must have and be able to maintain a state issued drivers license.
Compensation:
The hourly rate for this position generally ranges between $55-$60.
