Duties
- Independently plan, conduct, and administer inspections, surveys, and evaluations as part of a comprehensive industrial hygiene program for multiple military activities.
- Conduct periodic surveys of working conditions to determine the nature and magnitude of hazardous exposure and the effectiveness of existing control measures.
- Provide consultation and advice to various activities on occupational health problems.
- Conduct surveys and studies to determine the need for medical surveillance for employees who are routinely exposed to toxic materials, noise, or other physical hazards.
- Consult with the Industrial Hygiene Service Chief on surveys and studies performed to determine the control measures needed.
Requirements Conditions of Employment
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Tier 1: This position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
Qualifications
Management may select at any of the grade levels announced. Duties described reflect the full performance GS-12 level. Duties will be performed in a developmental capacity under close supervision. This recruitment provides promotion opportunity to the target grade of the position without further competition when selectee is eligible and recommended by management.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement For Industrial Hygienist
- Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree must be completed by May 2018. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts).
OR
- Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. Degree must be completed by May 2018. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts).

- Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
Minimum Qualifications For The GS-09 Level
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing support in researching technical publications regarding industrial hygiene; assisting in identifying and evaluating health hazards; and assisting with conducting baseline/annual industrial hygiene and special study surveys. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or a related science.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
Minimum Qualifications For The GS-11 Level
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes planning and conducting evaluations of work operations involving potentially hazardous environmental conditions; preparing technical reports; and making recommendations for controls and corrective actions of industrial hygiene problems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
OR
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or a related science.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
Minimum Qualifications For The GS-12 Level
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience conducting a wide variety of complex industrial hygiene surveys and assessments of chemical, physical, and biological hazards; preparing comprehensive written reports of survey findings with specification recommendations for eliminating/mitigating hazards; and providing resolution to problems relating to safety, health and environmental controls and the various industrial hygiene programs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performs at the next lower grade level in the federal service (GS-11).
Education
