DIRECTOR OF SAFETY AND HEALTH
Job Summary –
The Director of Safety & Health is responsible for leading and overseeing safety culture development, systems, processes, and programs and ensuring compliance with all company, local, provincial, territory, state and federal regulations. This leader will work to develop a culture of safety, where our employees' safety and well-being is a value by developing and influencing the leaders in their Business Unit(s). This leader will serve as a technical expert and resource in safety matters and serve as the leader/resource in their assigned network areas of responsibility. As a member of the corporate safety team, they are expected to help develop and execute strategic objectives targeting safety systems & processes, and SME program documents. Field support, auditing, and continuous improvement will also be key responsibilities, requiring flexibility and significant travel (~50%). Additionally, this director is responsible for working cross-functionally with other roles in corporate, legal, quality, human resources, etc. The Director of Safety & Health will have a direct reporting relationship with the Vice President of Manufacturing.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (not All Inclusive)
- Assist in the planning, development, implementation and administration of corporate Safety, Health, and Regulatory Compliance Policy and Procedures.
- Represent the Company in all issues and activities related to Safety, Health and Regulatory Compliance, including liaison with regulatory agencies, legislators, industry and trade associations, etc.
- Maintain a vigilant oversight and audit process of all facilities to determine, analyze and report compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Provide recommendations for control, correction, and continuous improvement based on results of incident investigations, audits and inspections.
- Provide leadership, direction, and information to senior and line management to facilitate proactive efforts in eliminating losses due to accidents, injuries, occupational illnesses and regulatory noncompliance.
- Plan and direct activities of Loss Control and Industrial Hygiene personnel in the continuous evaluation of occupational exposures.
- Lead the organization to continue development of the safety culture, compliance with required company, local, provincial, territory, state and federal regulatory requirements (reporting, permitting, training, recordkeeping, communications, etc.), and corporate safety initiatives.
- Serve as a technical resource for sites on all aspects of safety including OSHA, MSHA (and related local authorities having jurisdiction).
- Develop training plans/matrixes for each business unit, ensuring assignment of relevant content to all company associates.
- Assist business unit regional manufacturing managers with incident investigation/RCA, development of corrective/preventive action plans, and to track and drive closure of associated actions to ensure repeat incidents cannot occur.
- Coach and train leaders in incident response, care management, care and return to work processes for team members. Ensure proper implementation of these processes.
- Assist with the development of capital improvement plans related to safety controls and improvement.
- Provide information and guidance during budget development to ensure proper annual resourcing for safety in their businesses.
- Monitor safety metric trends to determine focus areas for improvement and performance in their businesses.
- Participate in design for safety/design safety review processes for significant projects as assigned.
- Execute risk reduction activities including internal audits, external audits risk assessment, risk reduction management.
- Support regions/sites as required when the site safety representative is not available.
- Interview and participate in recruiting processes for safety positions.
- Lead a team of regional EHS managers to accomplish team goals and to serve as a resource, coach and mentor for locations in their region.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 2 direct reports
- Set clear performance expectations and provide regular feedback
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment
- Monitor team performance and implement improvement plans as needed
Qualifications
(Education & Years of Experience and/or Specialized Skills Required):
- College Degree in a Safety related field, Natural Science or Business; Advanced Degree preferred.
- 10+ years' Safety and Health experience in a manufacturing environment.
- 5+ years' experience in a supervisory or managerial role
- Certified Safety Professional designation.
- Certified Industrial Hygienist designation.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills
- Excellent communication and computer skills.
